Loving Birth. Loving Life.

Hi, I’m Erin Acharya!

Birth Evolved is all about empowering families to enjoy a comprehensive birth journey, physically, emotionally and as natural as desired. I thought I’d share my birth journey and how I went from a K-8 educator and administrator to a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, Certified HypnoBirthing Instructor, and mom of three beautiful boys.

How it all began:

About a year into our marriage, my husband and I decided that we were ready to get pregnant.  As the youngest sibling in my birth family, I had no idea about birth or parenting. I didn’t even know what I needed to know!  Blissfully unaware of all that lay ahead in birthing and what it meant to become a mom, we soon found out we were expecting our first child.

I took the hospital birth class, which only taught me about physiological birth from the medical practitioners point of view and Jane Austin’s Prenatal Partners yoga class, which taught me how to connect to my partner and drop into my body in birth. These classes helped, and I had a “natural birth”, but I hadn’t felt present in my birth, or understand how to work with my laboring body, and didn’t feel empowered or have the skills to properly ask questions and communicate with my care providers in the hospital.

A few years after that, we discovered we were having twins and soon learned that one of the babies might have a problem. To combat my feelings of despair, loss of control and hopelessness, I delved into deeper mindfulness practices and HypnoBirthing, which became the foundation for my passion for neuroscience, hypnotherapy and NLP that I bring to Birth Evolved. I didn’t want to be a passive bystander in this complication or in the birth. I want to know what I was capable of – what we are all capable of when we know how to use our minds and listen to our bodies.

In this journey, I also learned that I wasn’t alone in feeling lost in the mystery of birthing.  As an educator, I became incredibly interested in the why of this mystery – why do we know so little about birth? This interest in understanding physiological birth, how birth is understood and portrayed in our culture, and how the mind and body work together, became the basis for Birth Evolved.

Looking back on these births, I learned so much about the power of our minds and how to create change and prepare for birth. After the birth of my twins, I quit my job as an administrator and pursued my dream of Birth Evolved, which involved years of more education and training, becoming a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist in advanced hypnotherapy techniques, and a NLP & HNLP practitioner as well as a Certified HypnoBirthing Childbirth Educator. An education that will always be ongoing.

What I’ve learned:

I’ve had a lot of years of reflecting, learning, and training that has given me perspective, insights, and tools. Here is what I wish I’d know when I was birthing my children. If something below resonates with you – run with it and see where it takes you!

  • Mindset matters – more than you know! Because you are so much more than you know on every level. Mindset is where the birth journey begins. It isn’t an afterthought, it is everything and one of the most important pieces for facing the challenge of becoming a parent.
  • Get very clear on what you want and where the gaps in your knowledge and ability lie that are keeping you from achieving that goal.
  • Learn to get curious and ask great questions – Always.
  • If you have a birth partner, trust in your birth partner and the strength of your relationship is so important.
  • Learn to trust your body and learn listen to what it is telling you. The body doesn’t lie. It is always in the present moment. Trust how it wants to move, especially in birth.
  • The strength in birthing and in becoming a parent lies in knowing that we are incredibly capable and that we need to take our learning, mental and physical health, and trust our intuition into our own hands and work with the amazing practitioners around us as a team. Believe in yourself – you can do this.

So, if mom and baby are healthy and the pregnancy is “normal” then let’s treat birth as normal. Let’s teach birthing parents what they need to know so that they can get back in touch with their instincts, release their minds from unnecessary fear and worries, so that they are free to work with their bodies and able to bring that power, trust in themselves, and strength into becoming a parent.

This leads to a calm and empowered birth experience where you truly know that you did your best. Knowing you did your best leads to feeling confident, strong and proud of what you and baby did together. So, what makes a “good” birth? How you feel about it – and that goes back to your mental prep.

How do you want to feel about your birth and the beginning of your journey into parenthood? How do you want to prepare? If you are ready, Birth Evolved is for you.

I just wanted to send sincere thanks for your time and the classes.  It was a wonderful experience and really empowered us to advocate for and ultimately have the birth that we wanted.  I am such an advocate for the hypnobirthing approach and really love the tools and attitude that it imparts.
